Measured

WHAT THIS IS. The 25 tallest completed dams in Rajasthan, ranked by the height each one's owner filed on the National Register of Specified Dams 2025. WHAT THE MEASURE IS, AND IT IS NOT THE HEIGHT YOU SEE. The register records height above the LOWEST FOUNDATION LEVEL — the Dam Safety Act's own definition, "measured from the lowest portion of the general foundation area to the top of dam". A dam founded deep in a gorge is taller by this measure than the wall a visitor sees from the road. It is the figure the Act uses to decide whether a dam is regulated at all, which is why it is the one ranked here. WHY THIS IS A MEASURED RANKING AND NOT AN EDITORIAL ORDERING. Because the number is a filing. The Central Water Commission and the National Dam Safety Authority publish it, compiled from what each State Dam Safety Organisation returned about its own dams, and this publication has changed none of it. Every other ordered list on this site that rests on an aggregated source is alphabetical, and says so; this one is not, and that difference is the whole reason the register was worth going to. No figure here is an estimate, and none is ours. WHAT IS EXCLUDED. The three dams the register records without a year of completion — Hathiadeh, Navnera Barrage, Parwan Major Multipurpose Irrigation Cum Drinking Water Project — are under construction and are not ranked among completed dams. They are published, and appear on their district and basin lists marked as under construction. 312 of the register's 315 Rajasthan dams were eligible; the 25 tallest appear here. WHY ONLY 25. A ranking of all 312 would be a table, not a list, and the tail is dams within a few centimetres of each other. The cut-off is stated rather than implied: the last entry stands 29 m. ORDER. By height, tallest first. Dams of equal height are ordered alphabetically, which carries no judgement.
