WHAT THIS IS. Every monument in the Braj region on the Archaeological Survey of India's register of Monuments of National Importance or the Government of Rajasthan's register of State Protected Monuments — 71 of them. ORDER. Alphabetical. Not a ranking, and no ranking of these is published anywhere this publication would reprint. WHICH DISTRICTS, AND ON WHOSE AUTHORITY. Braj is taken here to be Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bharatpur, Dholpur — 4 districts of the pre-2023 map the monument registers use. 4 of them come from the Government of Rajasthan's own enumeration of the state's historic regions: "Braj Region includes Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bharatpur and Dhaulpur districts." WHERE THE SOURCES DISAGREE. 3 districts on this list are claimed by more than one region, and the disagreement is recorded rather than settled quietly. Sawai Madhopur district is placed in Braj by Rajasthan Foundation, Government of Rajasthan ("Braj Region includes Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bharatpur and Dhaulpur districts.") and in Dhundhar by Wikipedia ("The region is centred on Jaipur and traditionally includes parts of the present-day districts of Jaipur, Dausa, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Kotputli-Behror, Karauli, and adjoining areas."). Karauli district is placed in Braj by Rajasthan Foundation, Government of Rajasthan ("Braj Region includes Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bharatpur and Dhaulpur districts.") and in Dhundhar by Wikipedia ("The region is centred on Jaipur and traditionally includes parts of the present-day districts of Jaipur, Dausa, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Kotputli-Behror, Karauli, and adjoining areas."). Bharatpur district is placed in Braj by Rajasthan Foundation, Government of Rajasthan ("Braj Region includes Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bharatpur and Dhaulpur districts.") and in Mewat by Wikipedia ("Bharatpur district (Pahari, Nagar, Deeg, Nadbai, Bhusawar, Weir, Kaman) of Rajasthan."). This publication follows the Government of Rajasthan's own enumeration where it speaks, and a published regional definition where it is silent; nothing here decides which reading is right. WHAT A CULTURAL REGION IS NOT. It is not an administrative unit and it has no gazetted boundary. Regions overlap, their edges are argued over, and the district is the finest grain any source used here works at — so a monument sits in this region because its DISTRICT was assigned to it, not because anybody has drawn a line around the monument itself. Treat this as complete against the mapping, which is a narrower claim than complete against the region. WHY VAGAD AND MEWAT HAVE NO LISTS. Both are real regions and neither could be assigned a district honestly. The Government of Rajasthan places Dungarpur and Banswara — Vagad's two districts — in Mewar, and this publication prefers the state's own enumeration where it speaks. Mewat's published definition claims named tehsils of Alwar, Dausa and Bharatpur rather than those districts entire, and a region list built on a partial claim would assert that every monument in a district sits somewhere its source never put it. Tonk district is claimed entire by nobody and appears on no region list at all. All three readings are recorded in the mapping. SOURCE AND ITS STANDARD. The monuments and their districts are transcribed from published lists of the two official registers; the district-to-region mapping is cited per district to the document that makes it. Under this site's sourcing standard an aggregated source may back a published claim, and claims resting only on one are marked "aggregated source" where they appear. SAME MONUMENTS, DIFFERENT CUT. Each of these also appears on its district's monument list and on the statewide list for its kind. This is one register sliced another way, not a second set of records.
