WHAT THIS IS. Every university and government college in Rajasthan whose register records it as established in or before 1970, ordered from the earliest year to the latest. 49 institutions qualify. WHAT THE ORDER MEANS. The year is the one the register itself publishes: the "Year of Establishment" column on the UGC's lists of state (public) and deemed-to-be universities, and the "Establish Year" column on the Rajasthan Department of College Education's register. It is the year the authority records, not a year this publication researched, and for a college transferred into the department from another management it records when the department began administering it rather than when teaching first began there. Where two institutions share a year they are ordered alphabetically, which carries no meaning at all. WHY 1970 IS THE CUT-OFF. It is stated rather than implied, and it carries no significance beyond keeping the page to a readable length. 418 institutions hold an establishment year on their register; 49 of them are 1970 or earlier. WHO IS MISSING, AND IT IS A LOT. Three groups, none of them by editorial choice: The 237 government colleges for which the department's register holds no year at all — it writes 0 in that column — cannot be placed in a chronology and are not here. Some of them are certainly older than entries that are. The 53 state (private) universities, because the UGC's list for that category publishes a date of notification rather than a year of establishment. Those are different facts and mixing them into one ordering would make the ranking mean two things at once. Every college the Department of College Education does not administer: the state's private colleges, its colleges of education, and the constituent colleges of its universities. Several of Rajasthan's oldest teaching institutions are in that last group. A list of the oldest institutions in the state would look different. This is a list of the oldest institutions on these two registers, which is a smaller and checkable claim. SOURCE AND ITS STANDARD. Read from the registers themselves rather than from a transcription of them: the University Grants Commission's consolidated lists of recognised universities, and the Rajasthan Department of College Education's register of the colleges it administers. Both are the authority's own record of its own decisions, which this site tiers A. No claim on these pages rests on an aggregated source.
