WHAT THIS IS. Every palaces and haveli on the Archaeological Survey of India's register of Monuments of National Importance or the Government of Rajasthan's register of State Protected Monuments — 52 of them, across 14 districts. WHY THIS IS NOT A "TOP TEN". Because no ranking of Rajasthan's palaces and havelis exists that this publication compiled, and reprinting a travel guide's ordering under our masthead would be that guide's judgement wearing our name. A complete register is the better artefact anyway: it is exhaustive, every entry carries its official identifier, and it is not published this way anywhere else. If you came looking for the ten best, this page cannot give you that and does not pretend to. ORDER. By district, then alphabetically. Not a ranking — nothing here is ordered by size, age, condition or visitor interest. HOW A MONUMENT WAS CLASSIFIED, AND THE LIMIT OF IT. The registers record a monument's name, not its type. A monument appears here if its recorded name contains palace, mahal, haveli or niwas. That rule is good and not perfect: it misses anything named without one of those words — a temple known only by its deity, a fort recorded under a settlement's name — and it can catch a building that sits inside one rather than being one. Treat this as complete against the registers as classified by name, which is a narrower claim than complete against Rajasthan. SOURCE AND ITS STANDARD. Transcribed from published lists of the two official registers. Under this site's sourcing standard an aggregated source may back a published claim; claims resting only on one are marked "aggregated source" on the page. SAME MONUMENTS, DIFFERENT CUT. Each of these also appears on its district's monument list. This is the same register sliced by kind rather than by place, not a second set of records.
