Cultural Regions

Rajasthan's historic cultural regions — Marwar, Mewar, Shekhawati, Hadoti and the rest — over the two official registers of protected monuments.

Drawn on the pre-2023 district boundaries.

One method, shared by every one of the 42 lists below.

WHAT THIS REGISTER IS. Rajasthan's historic cultural regions, each carrying the protected monuments of the districts assigned to it. The same 515 monuments the district lists on this site already publish, cut by the name the country uses rather than by the name the revenue department uses. WHY IT EXISTS. A cultural region is the unit a reader thinks in. "The forts of Shekhawati" is a question somebody asks; "the forts of Jhunjhunu district" is an administrative query. Shekhawati is also the region the Marwari merchant houses this publication documents came out of, which is why this axis exists here and not merely as a nicety. HOW A DISTRICT WAS ASSIGNED TO A REGION. This is the only judgement in the whole axis and it is sourced per district. The Government of Rajasthan publishes its own enumeration of the state's historic regions and names the districts of seven of them; where it speaks, it decides. Where it is silent — eight districts — a published definition of the region is used instead. Every district's row carries the document and a verbatim sentence from it naming that district. TWO RULES AT THE EDGES. A source that names a district ENTIRE outranks one that names only "parts of" it, which is why Mewat gets no list despite being a real region: its own definition claims named tehsils of Alwar, Dausa and Bharatpur, not those districts. And where two sources both name a district entire, the disagreement is published rather than settled quietly — twelve of the thirty-three districts are contested, and the losing reading is quoted on the methodology of every list it affects. WHAT THIS COSTS. Vagad produces nothing, because the state places its two districts in Mewar. Mewat produces nothing, by the rule above. Tonk district is claimed entire by nobody and sits on no region list. These are stated on every page rather than left as gaps for a reader who knows Rajasthan to notice. ORDER. Alphabetical within each list. Not a ranking: nothing here is ordered by size, age, condition or visitor interest, and no ranking of Rajasthan's monuments exists that this publication compiled. DISTRICT MAP. The pre-2023 districts, because that is the map the two monument registers were drawn on. The assembly and tehsil lists on this site use the post-2023 map; each list states which it belongs to rather than quietly reconciling them.

Ordered by the number of records in each, largest first.
